Have you ever realized that selecting Texas electricity providers is remarkably similar to selecting cell phone providers? Choose a company and a plan that works for you, and you’ll be all set.

Texas’ deregulated energy market gives consumers more options. Texas has the world’s biggest completely unregulated market in the US because of the beginning of deregulation in 2002.

There are over 26 million people in the state, well over 85% of the citizenry, who can choose their own electric company.

Deregulation, however, is not applied statewide. In this blog, we will explain why some parts of Texas have been deregulated while others are not, and we will specify which cities belong to each classification.

When and Why did Deregulation Happen in Cities of Texas?

Let’s take a quick look back at the history of the electricity industry to set the stage and gain some perspective on how we arrived where we are today. It’s been around for a long time, more than a century, but it wasn’t closely monitored. In 1935, lawmakers passed the Public Utility Holdings Inc.

The Energy Security Act of 1992 allows the development of deregulated energy markets in different states of Texas.

Let’s skip ahead to 1999. Deregulation of the energy market in Texas was a significant factor in the passage of Senate Bill 7. On 1 Jan 2002, electricity market sales in Texas were launched to competition after the old monopolies were broken up and a brand-new system was put in place. After more than two decades, the Texas market has developed into something unique. Hundreds of retail power companies offer a variety of plans, rates, rewards, and renewable power options to Texans in over 400 cities across the state.

Deregulation has Shaped the Texas Electricity Market

There is no doubt that deregulation has improved consumers’ lives. Cheaper electricity, with the option to switch providers if customers are unhappy with service, durability, or any other aspect of their current plan. However, deregulation has not merely led to lower prices; it has also facilitated new developments, most notably the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources. Even in terms of wind power, Texas recently ranked first in the country.

Several essential features of the electricity sector in Texas were also reimagined as a result of deregulation. There is no longer a monopoly held by a single utility company. The industry’s duties and operations are now divided into three tiers. This encompasses power-generation facilities. Therefore, it generates electricity. Utility companies deliver electricity to homes and businesses via poles and wires. On the other hand, retail electric suppliers sell electricity directly to customers.

Public Utility Commission of Cities of Texas

The Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas is in charge of enforcing the state’s energy generation and transmission rules.

Electric Reliability Council of Texas

ERCOT is responsible for ensuring reliable power delivery across its network of 47,000 miles of transmission system and 650 energy facilities under the oversight of the PUC.

Utilities in Deregulated Market

Energy is produced and distributed by utilities. Oncor Energy, AEP North, but also Texas-New Mexico Power are just some of the many Texas utility providers available.

Cooperatives supply Electric Cooperatives Energy for homes. A cooperative in Texas is a member of Texas Powered Cooperative societies.

Exercise Freedom to Choose

Choosing the most reliable retail electric provider makes sense if you’re one of the 85 percent of Texans who can do so. Energy Texas is the standard by which the electricity industry in Texas is measured.

Ambit Energy offers easy-to-understand plans at reasonable rates. And we top it all off with first-rate support for our customers. Bonus: the payoffs from our plans are so big they could fit in Texas.
